Christmas Wreaths - History, Tradition and Uses
Evergreen wreaths at Christmas time are a familiar sight on doors, above fireplaces, and on homes. Wreaths have been in use for many hundreds of years, even before the birth of Christ. Many historians believe that the first wreaths date back to the Persian Empire, when royalty and members of the upper class wore diadems, or fabric headbands adorned with jewels. Other cultures would later become fascinated with this tradition, picking it up and adapting it for themselves.

The Story of the Advent Wreath
Beautiful and symbolic, the Advent Wreath reminds Christians of the deeper meaning of Christmas and stirs within the heart love, joy, peace and hope for our world. There are several theories about the origination of the Advent Wreath. Whether it began as a non-Christian tradition or whether it did not appear until the 19thcentury are discussions best left to historians. It really does not matter because the Advent Wreath has become a symbol of great significance to Christians.

Advent defined by Webster is the "arrival" or "coming" of something significant. For Christians, the birth of Christ and His later crucifixion were momentous events. As Christians, we celebrate His birthday, Christmas. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas. For many Christians, part of the celebration of Advent is the beautiful Wreath.
Holiday Wreath
The Story of the Advent Wreath
Every part of the Advent Wreath is steeped in symbolism. Made of various evergreens that represent continuous life, the Wreath is also a reminder that with Christ, we have everlasting life. Each evergreen has its own specific meaning. The prickly leaves of holly serve as a reminder of the crown of thorns placed on Christ at the crucifixion. Using laurel represents victory over persecution. Pine cones used in decorating the Wreath signifies life and resurrection. Of course, the circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternity and enduring life.
The Story of the Advent Wreath
Four candles adorn the Advent Wreath. Most Advent Wreaths are made with three purple candles and one pink candle. Many modern Wreaths include a larger white candle in the center of the wreath which represents Christ. The four outer candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Each Sunday, an outer candle is lit. On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, the middle candle or Christ candle is lit. According to historians, in the early years of the church, each candle in the Wreath was given a name. The outer candles were hope, peace, love and joy and the center candle, the Christ.
Through the years, the Advent Wreath has become a family tradition for many Christians. Not all churches formally recognize the season of Advent and do not include the Wreath in Christmas celebrations. However, it's interesting to note that in recent years, many of the Protestant and Evangelical Christians have recognized the spiritual importance of Advent. As a result, more churches have revived some of the Advent customs with this Wreath being one of those customs.
Whether or not your church displays the Advent Wreath, this is a tradition you can observe in your home. Advent Wreaths can be purchased or made. Creating a Wreath as a family would certainly magnify its importance in Christian families. This is a wonderful family tradition you can begin. The beautiful memories you make with your children will last forever. As adults, they will want to continue this wonderful tradition.

Christmas Spelling Game
Holiday Wreath
Christmas Classroom Activities for Fun and Learning
One of the Christmas classroom activities that is sure to be a hit with the kids is the Christmas Spelling Bee Game. Although it might not sound like fun, kids love this fast moving game that has an element of chance to it.
Christmas Classroom Activities for Fun and Learning
For this Christmas game the children stand in a circle. The caller gives a word for the children to spell and nominates the person to start. Children give one letter at a time going in a clockwise direction. The child who is after the person who says the last letter says 'Jingle Bells'. Then the next child is out and sits down. If a child says a wrong letter, they are out and sit down also. Then the next person must give the correct letter. When the word is completed, the caller then gives the next word and play continues around the circle. The last child standing is the winner. Christmas words can be used for the spelling bee. Here are some words to get you started, stocking, chimney, wreath, carols, elves, merry, holly, presents, Santa, angel, Rudolph, tree, candles, sleigh, and decorations.
Christmas Math Activities
Christmas math activities are also ideal as Christmas classroom activities. A simple Christmas math activity is to draw several Christmas trees on the board and then put the numbers from an addition, subtraction, multiplication or division operation jumbled up in each tree. The pattern for the operation is then written under the tree. If the numbers 2, 4, 6 and 7 are in the tree, the pattern? X? =??, would be added under the tree. Children then have to unjumble the numbers in the tree to create a true operation to fit the pattern. The answer for this one would be 6 X 7 = 42. More complex operations can also be used.
Other Christmas classroom activities include Christmas craft activities where decorations, gifts, cards and wrapping paper can be made.
Christmas Pasta Wreath
A simple but very effective Christmas craft activity is to make a Christmas wreath from a paper plate and different shaped pasta pieces. Cut a hole out of the center of the paper plate and then glue pasta around the wreath shape in a pattern. It won't look very interesting yet, but spray it with silver or gold spray paint and it will great. It can then have a ribbon tied to the top of it and be hung on a door or wall as a Christmas decoration.
There are loads and loads of Christmas classroom activities than be used to give the kids some fun in the classroom before Christmas. If you choose your activities carefully, then not only will the kids have fun but they will also be learning at the same time.

Materials Needed:
3 pieces bright calico strips in contrasting colors (red, green, gold): each 4 ½-inch x 44-inches 1 Bone ring 1 Wire coat hanger Polyester stuffing Large bright bow Sewing machine Needle Thread Scissors
Procedure:
Double each calico strip lengthwise, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam and turn right side out forming three tubes. Stuff each tube firmly with polyester. Stitch ends of tubes shut. Stitch the three tubes together at one end. Braid from stitched end holding tubes flat while braiding. Secure the ends together arranging them so that the tube ends are even. Join both ends of braids together to form a wreath. Sew on a bone ring at back to use as hanger. Tie a large bow in front over the stitching where braids are joined. Bend a wire coat hanger into a circle leaving the hook on for hanging. Tack in place on back of wreath, so to keep the shape of the wreath better.

Green comes from evergreens which have been used since ancient times to celebrate the winter solstice. In the early days of the Roman Catholic Church when the pagan rituals of the winter solstice were merged into the celebration of Christ's birth evergreens continued to be used. In winter solstice celebrations evergreens symbolized life that survived through the long, dark winters. The Christians thought of green as symbolizing the hope for eternal life that Jesus offers.

How Did Red and Green Become the Colors of Christmas?
A commonly accepted explanation for the use of red and green is based on a historical fact. Back in the 1300's Adam and Eve's day was celebrated on Christmas Eve. Churches in those days presented a lot of plays because most people were illiterate. The plays were focused on religious stories of importance to the church and were called miracle plays. On Adam and Eve's day the play was called the paradise play and portrayed what happened in the garden of eden. There wasn't an apple tree available in the winter so they made one by tying apples to a pine tree and it served as the tree that bore the forbidden fruit. This pine tree with the red apples eventually became a tradition in all churches and was used in their Christmas celebrations every year.
How Did Red and Green Become the Colors of Christmas?
The tree became known as the Paradise Tree and soon people began erecting pine trees in their own homes during the holiday season decorated with red apples. This began the tradition of Christmas trees and the most popular explanation for the use of the colors of red and green for the holidays.
Another explanation is that green symbolizes the hope Jesus gave us through his sacrifice and is the color of evergreens which stay alive all year. Red is said to symbolize the blood of Christ in this explanation. The blood was shed by Jesus so that people could be saved and when combined with green it expresses the hope of our redemption through Christ sacrifice.
Holly is a popular Christmas decoration because it combines the color of green in its leaves with the red of its berries. Traditional Christmas wreaths have always been decorated with red bows and red berries. Santa Claus has always had a red costume and Rudolph the Reindeer has always had a red nose. These colors are here to stay and will always represent the holidays in most peoples minds.

Leading up to the Christmas holiday, the Spanish celebrate a tradition called "Hogueras" (bonfires). This is a celebration of the winter solstice which is the shortest day of the year. At this time, people jump over a bonfire, symbolizing a protection against illness. Also during the winter solstice, swing sets are constructed to be used by the people in the belief that by swinging high they will cause the sun to move higher in the sky.

Popular Christmas Traditions and Christmas Decorations in Spain
On Christmas Eve, tiny lamps are lit in the windows throughout the villages, representing the stars in the Christmas Eve sky. At midnight, bells are rung in each of the villages, calling everyone to "La Misa Del Gallo", the Mass of the Rooster. It is called this because the rooster was known as the first of the animals to announce Christ's birth.
Popular Christmas Traditions and Christmas Decorations in Spain
After the midnight Mass, Christmas dinner is served. The traditional holiday meal includes "Pavo Trufado de Navidad", which is Christmas turkey with truffles. Roast lamb, suckling pig, duck, and seafood such as lobster, shrimp, trout and salmon may also be served, depending on which part of the country one is in. Traditional desserts may include marzipan, made of honey, almonds and eggs, and polvorones, which is a sweetbread. Nuts, dried fruits, and caramel custard are among other desserts served. No meal is complete without a drink. Cava is the Spanish champagne, and it often accompanies the Christmas meal.
In many countries a visit by Santa Claus is an important part of a Christmas celebration. However, in Spain, this is not the case. The children do receive small gifts from "Papa Noel" on Christmas, but this is not a big part of the festivities. Instead, they celebrate January 6, which is the Three King's Day, a day commemorating the Three Wise Men who brought gifts to the Baby Jesus. On January 5, the children take part in a parade to see the Three Kings when they come to their village or town. When given the chance, they ask the Three Kings for the presents they are hoping for. On the eve of this special day, the children leave their shoes out where they are easily found. They are filled with straw and carrots for the camels on which the Wise Men travel. On the next morning, the straw and carrots are gone, replaced by presents. On this day, a special dessert is served, the "Roscon de los Reyes" which is a large circular cake. It is decorated with candied fruits, which represent the jewels which were on the Three Kings' robes. There is a surprise baked into the cake, and whoever finds it becomes the king or queen of the house.
Spain's celebration of Christmas is similar to the manner in which other countries celebrate it with Christmas trees and Christmas wreaths.. But by also having its own unique traditions, a visitor can gain insight into the people of Spain and their lives. Knowing the traditions of various countries such as Spain can give one a new appreciation of the Christmas holiday around the world.

One of the interesting Christmas door decorating ideas that some people have tried is to make your front door look like it is a giant wrapped present. In order to do this, wrap the door up to the edge and fold the paper back under itself rather than wrapping around the edge. Use pieces of double stick tape to stick the paper onto your front door. You can use the same trick to put on large pieces of ribbon and then leave a big bow in the center. You may want to test the tape on your door to be sure it does not bother the paint.

Place the largest items on the wreath first and then fill in with the smaller items. You can use a hot glue gun or the wires on the wreath - wrapping each item very snugly.
Some other fun Christmas door decorating ideas include taking things from inside and using them outside. The same goes for old Christmas tree decorations or collections of bows from old Christmas presents.

About 800 years before the birth of Christ, Greeks began to recognize the winners of their Olympic games by crowning them with wreaths made of laurel tree branches. Years later, when the games moved from city to city, branches from local trees were used to make these victory wreaths for the winners. During the Roman Empire, military and political leaders wore crowns of leaves and greenery. For example, Julius Caesar was crowned with a wreath made of fresh laurel branches and leaves. The transition of the wreath from a head adornment to a wall decoration is believed to have occurred when athletes (or perhaps victorious military leaders) returned home, and they would hang their headbands on their walls or doors, as a trophy of their victory.

Christmas Wreaths - History, Tradition and Uses
The Egyptian, Chinese, and Hebrew cultures were known to have used evergreen branches as a symbol of eternal life, because the conifer trees stayed green throughout the winter months. After the birth of Christ, the Christmas wreath made of evergreen branches came to symbolize the triumph of life over the long winter months.
Christmas Wreaths - History, Tradition and Uses
The Advent wreath also became a popular holiday tradition after the birth of Christ. This decoration was usually placed flat on a table and was used to count down the four weeks immediately preceding Christmas. Traditionally the wreath was constructed with four candles in a circle and one candle in the middle. The four outside candles were purple or violet, and the center candle was white. Four weeks before Christmas, the first violet candle would be lit. The following week, an additional candle would be lit, and so on, until the white center candle is lit on Christmas Eve or day, signifying the arrival of Christ. A brief prayer was said to accompany the lighting of each candle. The reason for the final candle being located in the center is to symbolize that we should keep Christ at the center of our lives and the center of the Christmas celebration.
Based on drawings and paintings, most historians believe that the use of evergreen wreaths at Christmas time spread across Northern Europe, Spain, and Italy during the early 19th century. The greenery was used as a symbol of life persevering through the cold winter months, and the holly berries that were often used as an adornment were a symbol of the blood of Christ.
It is also believed that Europeans also used wreaths on their doors to represent their family identity, much like a family crest. These wreaths were made from products grown in their own gardens, such as grapevines, fresh flowers, or other produce. The crafting of these wreaths was a family ritual that followed the same general pattern year after year.
Today, wreaths are still widely used around the world. In the U.S., wreaths are a traditional decoration for Christmas, as well as many other holidays throughout the year. Wreaths now adorn doors for Halloween, Valentine's Day, the Fourth of July, and Easter. Furthermore, wreaths are no longer limited to only evergreen branches. Many craft stores, books, and television shows feature unique wreaths made of a variety of unusual materials and decorations for almost any occasion.

Anyone can hang a holiday wreath on their front door. How about trying something a little bit different though? Maybe you're asking, "How do I hang an outdoor wreath on windows?" It's very simple to do and will add a little bit of pizazz to your holiday decorations. There are a couple options.
Holiday Wreath
How Do I Hang an Outdoor Wreath on Windows
The first thing you could do is go to your local home improvement store and buy some large suction cup type hanger hooks. They are normally located in the hardware section. Any store associate can point them out to you. Once you have your package of hangers all you have to do is:
How Do I Hang an Outdoor Wreath on Windows
- Open the package
- Remove a hanger
- Moisten the suction cup
- Stick it on the window where ever you want the wreath to hang.
- Hang the wreath from the hook
- Adjust the wreath for proper center and level
One word of caution though, if you have any sort of exterior film on your window be sure that the wreath won't scratch it. You don't want to take the wreath down after the holidays and find a big ugly scratch running down the window!
Another option would be just to use a hammer and nail. Before you break out the tools and start pounding away look for a good spot. You don't want to be swinging a hammer next to a pane of glass. One wrong move and you have a really expensive wreath! Instead how about hanging it from the window casing instead?
Hanging it from the window casing is a much safer alternative and still looks beautiful. In fact why not put down the hammer and simply get an eye hook with a screw type shank. Those are the hooks that look like a question mark. You won't have to worry about a slipped hammer then!
Simply center the eyehook in the window casing. Screw it in Hang the wreath from it. Adjust the wreath to proper level and center.
One other small concern when hanging a wreath on a window: be sure that the wreath isn't hanging somewhere that it will obstruct a hasty exit in the event of a fire. Your family's safety is so much more important than any holiday decoration. If you have a picture window hanging the wreath from it would be a better option than one that offers a path outside the home.

The winter solace starts on the 21st of December and is the shortest day in the year. Pagans believed in holding a festival of the sun to encourage its return and bring good fortune and bountiful crop with it. Accompanying this were a number of practices still very much in evidence today over the festive season.

1. The Yule log that we all have on our mantelpiece is reminiscent of the time when an oak log was burnt for twelve hours using the remnants of the previous years to light it. Once it had been burnt the log was decorated and kept throughout the year and its ashes were spread on the fields to encourage a good harvest.

2. Decorating your house with holly and ivy is very much a druidic tradition. They believed that these evergreens along with their blood red berries were a sign of fertility and rebirth. It was placed around doors and windows, so as to capture evil spirits before they entered the house in its spiky leaves. Echoes of this are in today's practice of placing holly wreaths on front doors.
3. The same is true of mistletoe which grows in the boughs of the oak tree. Druids would cut it down with a golden sickle making sure that it did not touch the ground. Meeting beneath a sprig of mistletoe was considered fortunate and a sign of goodwill; hence nowadays at Christmas we suspend it above doorways and exchange kisses if we meet beneath it.
4. Advent wreaths again have their roots in Celtic traditions. The countdown to the celebrations was marked with an evergreen holly wreath or a Celtic rope knot to hold four or five candles. One was lit each week in the lead up to Christmas. Traditionally there were 24 candles, the last of which was lit on the winter solace, bringing most light at the time when the world outside is at its darkest.
5. Place a lit candle in your window to welcome Mary and Joseph should they be passing.
6. Catching the Wren, traditionally an Irish feast celebrated on St Stephen's Day, December 26th, where participants would try to catch a wren, bringing them good luck. Now it is considered more as a time for going door to door, carol singing and passing around the hat.
7. Hogmanay, the Scottish four day festival of the New Year, is when the streets come alive with singing, dancing and partying. These include eating of haggis, a mince, potato and onion based filling put into a sheep stomach.
8. January 6th is the day to celebrate Little Christmas. Here traditionally women have the day off housework and the Christmas decorations are taken down. It is considered bad luck to take them down before or leave them up after this date.
9. The Celtic knot is a prime example symbolizing the life force, as in its never ending circle it weaves its path. These can be used in a variety of decorative ways, as place settings, Christmas cards or wreaths for your front door.
10. Christmas cake, Christmas pudding/ Plum Pudding or Figgy Pudding contain a rich mix of dried fruit, nuts and brandy. You start making them at the end of harvest and leave them to mature in time for Christmas. A cake of plenty made in the deep midst of winter.
11. In Scotland they have the tradition of First Footing, where at the stroke of midnight neighbors visit each other with a small gift, fruit cake or shortbread in return for a wee dram of whiskey. In other parts it is lucky for the first person to enter the house on New Years Day to bring a piece of coal as good luck for the coming year. Tall dark handsome men are thought to be the luckiest, while red headed women are sadly the least lucky ones to have knock on your door.
The Christmas greetings you will hear throughout both Wales and Ireland in the traditional Celtic languages are in Welsh "Nadolig Llawn" and in Gaelic "Nollaig Shona duit". However you choose to say it, have a Happy Christmas.

Anyone can hang a holiday wreath on their front door. How about trying something a little bit different though? Maybe you're asking, "How do I hang an outdoor wreath on windows?" It's very simple to do and will add a little bit of pizazz to your holiday decorations. There are a couple options.

Christmas Spelling Game

Set up your village to display the tradition of Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. In England it is a national holiday. Although many manufactured reasons for the holiday exist, this old time village tradition appears to originate from the practice of boys collecting money in clay boxes the day after Christmas. Looking further back in history some say that the tradition began from a custom in the Middle Ages (over 800 years ago) when village churches would open their 'alms boxes' and distribute the contents to poor people the day after Christmas.

Christmas trees in your village of the past were first lighted with waxed candles. In the old days this presented a fire hazard as you might imagine, therefore containers filled with water were on hand at the base of the Christmas tree.

If creating a New York City Christmas village (from 1930s onward), which display people, be sure to include workers and general laborers in the mix. These construction works are responsible for the well established tradition of a Christmas tree on display at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Those first trees were undecorated and unlit.
Other traditions began:
Manufactured Christmas tree ornaments, 1880.
Christmas greeting cards, the late 1830s.
Writing Xmas instead of Christmas, since the 1500s.
Candy canes, 1750 and beyond. Red made them striped in the 1950s.
Christmas declared a national holiday, 1870.
If your Christmas village is a European town, remember that evergreen branches were hung over their doors and windows to ward off witches, ghosts, evil spirits and illness.
Evergreen wreaths - round or circular - have often been used as the decorative piece on the front of a door. Variations of wreaths might include berry, grapevine, poinsettia and snow. The berry wreath has individual and small clusters of red berries, holly leaves mixed with pine cones and needle styles. Not much has changed over the years of Christmas village decorating in respect of wreaths.
Finally, the tradition of Christmas tree in a small village comes from Germany. It isn't particularly clear how the tradition gained a foothold in Germany to begin with. Some of those Christian Germans would build pyramids for Christmas. These pyramids were made of wood and would be decorated with evergreens and candles if wood was in short supply.
However it was Martin Luther, a Protestant reformer, who was the first to add lit candles as decoration to a tree. His inspiration was from the brilliant light of twinkling stars that shone through evergreen trees as he walked home one winter evening. As the story goes, Martin Luther placed a tree in his house and placed wires with small, lighted candles around the branches of the tree.
That is how the Christmas tree as we know it today, lights and all, began. It was not long after this that village squares in large and small towns across the USA began decorating their exterior trees with light.

Christmas should touch every room in your home and since every room has a focal point, you can play that up with Christmas greenery and/or florals. Fresh greens are fantastic, but taking into consideration today's economy, artificial greenery might be an option that is both versatile and cost effective. Choosing artificial greenery of good quality is very important. Look for something that looks real...like "real touch" or "natural touch" greens and flowers and be prepared to fool many a guest! Use your Christmas greenery to bring attention to the entrances to each doorway. Hang garland around every doorway and archway so that when your guests walk around they feel like they are filled with Christmas cheer. Use swags to adorn a door or showcase a picture or a mirror. Each room can have its own theme and you can work with what's in your home already. Choose a theme to suit each room, something to compliment the colors of what's already there. If you have a room that's decorated in beautiful shades of yellows and golds you may not want to throw a red poinsettia into the mix. A poinsettia in warm gold or copper tones will be just as festive and will not compete with your decor colors. Adding Christmas plants or flowers should allow the colors of the room to continue to flow.

Dried-look flowers are great options to consider for use during the holidays. Dried-look flowers have remained popular over time and pairing them with silk flowers continue to be a timeless classic. Faux flowers are a great way to decorate and will last long past the Christmas season. Arrangements of Christmas flowers will help you bring the Holiday spirit into any room in your home. You can make small arrangements combining Christmas greenery sprigs, silk and dried-look flowers in several small vases to use on a dining table as centerpieces for a festive dinner setting. And if your decor theme is neutral, you may want to showcase Holiday flowers in festive red and green colors in large vases to be placed on different tables throughout your home.
The Christmas season is short and it should be enjoyed from beginning to end. Holiday greenery and flowers are a addition to make that happen. Create a theme and enjoy!

If you would like to try something different and you have someone artistic in your family, you can cover your door with Bristol board that shows a scene of what it looks like inside. When people walk up to the door, it will look like the door is already open and they will be greeted with a festive scene. You can make it look just like the front hall of your home only you can add Santa, some elves or whatever your imagination can come up with. If you use Bristol board instead of paper it is something that you could use again next Christmas.
There is nothing quite as traditional and charming as a beautiful wreath on your front door. That idea never goes out of style. Go to your craft store or browse a magazine for an idea that you enjoy. Whether you make it yourself or purchase a ready-made wreath, you can have a lot of fun. Invite a friend or neighbor to make a wreath with you. Instructions for making Christmas wreaths can be found online in blogs, forums and videos.
Those evergreen wreaths that you purchase at the craft store need to be "fluffed up" each year. Take a little time to perk up the evergreen sprigs. Add a beautiful bow for a simple but stunning wreath. Or decorate the entire wreath with ornaments or natural materials like berries, pine cones and grasses. Place the largest items on the wreath first and then fill in with the smaller items. You can use a hot glue gun or the wires on the wreath - wrapping each item very snugly.
Some other fun Christmas door decorating ideas include taking things from inside and using them outside. If you have extra stockings that you do not use any more, you can hang them from the door for something different than the traditional wreath. The same goes for old Christmas tree decorations or collections of bows from old Christmas presents.
Whenever it is that you choose for Christmas door decorating ideas this holiday season remember to have lighting on your porch. Extra lighting gives your porch a festive look and also makes it a little safer for guests. Enjoy the holidays without adding extra stress to your schedule. If you enjoy making decorations for your home and have set aside time to do that, then have a ball! Purchasing a beautiful wreath or other ornament for your door is fantastic as well.
