The Story of the Advent Wreath

ItemTitle

Beautiful and symbolic, the Advent Wreath reminds Christians of the deeper meaning of Christmas and stirs within the heart love, joy, peace and hope for our world. There are several theories about the origination of the Advent Wreath. Whether it began as a non-Christian tradition or whether it did not appear until the 19thcentury are discussions best left to historians. It really does not matter because the Advent Wreath has become a symbol of great significance to Christians.

Leading up to the Christmas holiday, the Spanish celebrate a tradition called "Hogueras" (bonfires). This is a celebration of the winter solstice which is the shortest day of the year. At this time, people jump over a bonfire, symbolizing a protection against illness. Also during the winter solstice, swing sets are constructed to be used by the people in the belief that by swinging high they will cause the sun to move higher in the sky.

Popular Christmas Traditions and Christmas Decorations in Spain

On Christmas Eve, tiny lamps are lit in the windows throughout the villages, representing the stars in the Christmas Eve sky. At midnight, bells are rung in each of the villages, calling everyone to "La Misa Del Gallo", the Mass of the Rooster. It is called this because the rooster was known as the first of the animals to announce Christ's birth.

Popular Christmas Traditions and Christmas Decorations in Spain

After the midnight Mass, Christmas dinner is served. The traditional holiday meal includes "Pavo Trufado de Navidad", which is Christmas turkey with truffles. Roast lamb, suckling pig, duck, and seafood such as lobster, shrimp, trout and salmon may also be served, depending on which part of the country one is in. Traditional desserts may include marzipan, made of honey, almonds and eggs, and polvorones, which is a sweetbread. Nuts, dried fruits, and caramel custard are among other desserts served. No meal is complete without a drink. Cava is the Spanish champagne, and it often accompanies the Christmas meal.

In many countries a visit by Santa Claus is an important part of a Christmas celebration. However, in Spain, this is not the case. The children do receive small gifts from "Papa Noel" on Christmas, but this is not a big part of the festivities. Instead, they celebrate January 6, which is the Three King's Day, a day commemorating the Three Wise Men who brought gifts to the Baby Jesus. On January 5, the children take part in a parade to see the Three Kings when they come to their village or town. When given the chance, they ask the Three Kings for the presents they are hoping for. On the eve of this special day, the children leave their shoes out where they are easily found. They are filled with straw and carrots for the camels on which the Wise Men travel. On the next morning, the straw and carrots are gone, replaced by presents. On this day, a special dessert is served, the "Roscon de los Reyes" which is a large circular cake. It is decorated with candied fruits, which represent the jewels which were on the Three Kings' robes. There is a surprise baked into the cake, and whoever finds it becomes the king or queen of the house.

Spain's celebration of Christmas is similar to the manner in which other countries celebrate it with Christmas trees and Christmas wreaths.. But by also having its own unique traditions, a visitor can gain insight into the people of Spain and their lives. Knowing the traditions of various countries such as Spain can give one a new appreciation of the Christmas holiday around the world.

If you're worried about budget, there are plenty of ways to create amazing Christmas yard decorations without shelling out too much money. First off, you don't have to buy new items to decorate your yard - you can purchase from garage sales, thrift stores or consignment stores. In the end, it won't be about the price you paid for these decorations but how you used them using your creativity.

Holiday Wreath

You can also try shopping online on sites like Amazon.com and ebay.com as they offer great bargains on Christmas decorations, whether used or unused. Lastly, it is best to plan beforehand and shop ahead of Christmas shoppers. Mall prices usually spike up as the holidays approach, so it is best to shop for Christmas décor early on.

Best Christmas Decorating Ideas for Your Front Yard

When it comes to your Christmas yard decorations, go for something simple yet sophisticated. Keep in mind that moderation is the key - if you overcrowd your yard with too much décor you'll end up spending more than planned and yet fail to achieve the goals of a good display. Most importantly, put safety ahead of everything else as it is the kids who spend more time playing in the yard.

Decide on a theme

Decide on a theme and stick to it. Doing so will help you save time and money because you know exactly what you're going for. If you're more of a traditionalist, go for iconic Christmas images like Santa Claus and his reindeer or Frosty the Snowman. You can also try making the nativity scene of baby Jesus as your centerpiece.

Add some greenery

Adding live and natural greenery, as well as wreaths will add a classic touch to your Christmas yard decorations. You can put up a big wreath on your main door and decorate it with flowers, pines and bows the color of your yard décor color scheme. Alternatively, you can hang small wreaths outside each window.

Light it up

Any holiday yard decorations won't be complete without Christmas lights. Whether you're going for simple white lights or those candy-colored ones, they're sure to add a warm Christmas glow and finishing effect on your yard decorations, especially at night.

1. Natural Wreaths

Holiday Wreath

How to Make Christmas Decorations From Nature

Natural wreaths are available at almost every store, but you can make your own and save money.

How to Make Christmas Decorations From Nature

You can make a small or large wreath from English Ivy. English Ivy is easy to grow and it does grow pretty quickly. Once your plant has some length to it, wrap the ivy around a frame that you have inserted into your pot. You can add lights or just about any kind of decorations you like such as berries or other natural decorations. Another great way to make a wreath is to make one from cut greens. Use a round wire frame that you can make from a coat hanger or you can purchase one at any craft store. Take some of your evergreen bunches and tie them together at the base with wire. Then, wind the evergreen branches around the wire frame or take a coat hanger apart and weaver the coat hanger wire around the branches from beginning to end and then form it into a circle.  You can decorate the evergreen bunches with natural fruits and berries and put a bow at the top. For Christmas tree wreaths, take some small twigs and make them into wreaths to hang them on your Christmas tree. You can use a craft Styrofoam circle and add leaf bunches, berries and pine cones with some fresh bay leaves stuck in for scent.  You can also use a glue gun to glue everything to the craft circle instead.

2. Natural Garland

Instead of buying garland at the store for your stairwells or for on your mantle, make them out of cut evergreen branches. Wire the evergreen branches and wind them around your handrails or place them on your mantle. They also look nice over a doorway in a swag design.

When you make your garland, add some bay leaves for a wonderful scent. If you have a bay laurel shrub, the leaves cut from the shrub would be perfect. If you don't have a bay laurel shrub, you can also purchase bay leaves in bulk in some markets. Secure the bay leaves with twine until you have the length that you need and then inter-mingle them with the evergreen branches. Then, add dried fruit, pine cones and berries.

3. Clove-Studded Oranges or Apples

Clove-studded oranges or apples are a wonderful traditional decoration and many years ago, they were given as gifts. They were called pomanders and some of these still exist in museums. Oranges, apples and lemons are typically used to make pomanders. They are very easy to make and they smell wonderful! Here are easy instructions for you to make your own pomanders.

First, with a small knitting needed, skewer or fork, pierce the fruit all over, making each hole about ½" apart. Then, put dried cloves into all of the wholes. In a small paper bag, mix 2 teaspoons each of ground cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add ½ teaspoon of ground orris root if you can find it. The orris root helps to dry and preserve the fruit. Put the clove-studded fruit in the paper bag and shake to completely coat the fruit. Then, place the fruit in a cool, dry place for two weeks. Shake the pomander once a day. Pomanders also look good in a bowl or displayed on a mantle.

These are just a few ideas for decorating your home this holiday season with nature. Have fun!

Advent defined by Webster is the "arrival" or "coming" of something significant. For Christians, the birth of Christ and His later crucifixion were momentous events. As Christians, we celebrate His birthday, Christmas. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas. For many Christians, part of the celebration of Advent is the beautiful Wreath.

Holiday Wreath

The Story of the Advent Wreath

Every part of the Advent Wreath is steeped in symbolism. Made of various evergreens that represent continuous life, the Wreath is also a reminder that with Christ, we have everlasting life. Each evergreen has its own specific meaning. The prickly leaves of holly serve as a reminder of the crown of thorns placed on Christ at the crucifixion. Using laurel represents victory over persecution. Pine cones used in decorating the Wreath signifies life and resurrection. Of course, the circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternity and enduring life.

The Story of the Advent Wreath

Four candles adorn the Advent Wreath. Most Advent Wreaths are made with three purple candles and one pink candle. Many modern Wreaths include a larger white candle in the center of the wreath which represents Christ. The four outer candles represent the four weeks of Advent. Each Sunday, an outer candle is lit. On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, the middle candle or Christ candle is lit. According to historians, in the early years of the church, each candle in the Wreath was given a name. The outer candles were hope, peace, love and joy and the center candle, the Christ.

Through the years, the Advent Wreath has become a family tradition for many Christians. Not all churches formally recognize the season of Advent and do not include the Wreath in Christmas celebrations. However, it's interesting to note that in recent years, many of the Protestant and Evangelical Christians have recognized the spiritual importance of Advent. As a result, more churches have revived some of the Advent customs with this Wreath being one of those customs.

Whether or not your church displays the Advent Wreath, this is a tradition you can observe in your home. Advent Wreaths can be purchased or made. Creating a Wreath as a family would certainly magnify its importance in Christian families. This is a wonderful family tradition you can begin. The beautiful memories you make with your children will last forever. As adults, they will want to continue this wonderful tradition.

One of the interesting Christmas door decorating ideas that some people have tried is to make your front door look like it is a giant wrapped present. In order to do this, wrap the door up to the edge and fold the paper back under itself rather than wrapping around the edge. Use pieces of double stick tape to stick the paper onto your front door. You can use the same trick to put on large pieces of ribbon and then leave a big bow in the center. You may want to test the tape on your door to be sure it does not bother the paint.

For a twist on this idea, make a matching smaller door out of cardboard for the elves to use. Cover the cardboard with the same color that you covered your real door. Add a small wreath or ribbon to match your real door. Set it next to your real door and post a little note that says "Elves enter here!"

Christmas Door Decorating Ideas to Bedazzle Your Porch!

If you would like to try something different and you have someone artistic in your family, you can cover your door with Bristol board that shows a scene of what it looks like inside. When people walk up to the door, it will look like the door is already open and they will be greeted with a festive scene. You can make it look just like the front hall of your home only you can add Santa, some elves or whatever your imagination can come up with. If you use Bristol board instead of paper it is something that you could use again next Christmas.

There is nothing quite as traditional and charming as a beautiful wreath on your front door. That idea never goes out of style. Go to your craft store or browse a magazine for an idea that you enjoy. Whether you make it yourself or purchase a ready-made wreath, you can have a lot of fun. Invite a friend or neighbor to make a wreath with you. Instructions for making Christmas wreaths can be found online in blogs, forums and videos.

Those evergreen wreaths that you purchase at the craft store need to be "fluffed up" each year. Take a little time to perk up the evergreen sprigs. Add a beautiful bow for a simple but stunning wreath. Or decorate the entire wreath with ornaments or natural materials like berries, pine cones and grasses. Place the largest items on the wreath first and then fill in with the smaller items. You can use a hot glue gun or the wires on the wreath - wrapping each item very snugly.

Some other fun Christmas door decorating ideas include taking things from inside and using them outside. If you have extra stockings that you do not use any more, you can hang them from the door for something different than the traditional wreath. The same goes for old Christmas tree decorations or collections of bows from old Christmas presents.

Whenever it is that you choose for Christmas door decorating ideas this holiday season remember to have lighting on your porch. Extra lighting gives your porch a festive look and also makes it a little safer for guests. Enjoy the holidays without adding extra stress to your schedule. If you enjoy making decorations for your home and have set aside time to do that, then have a ball! Purchasing a beautiful wreath or other ornament for your door is fantastic as well. Enjoy the season!

Being a part of the set of traditional Christmas Ornaments these beautifully crafted and made by hand (if natural) decoration brings forth freshness to the holiday seasons fun.

Holiday Wreath

Christmas Wreath Complete Information

Christmas wreaths come in a variety of designs and shapes. However traditionally these are Circular in shape. Primarily these can be fresh or Synthetic. The fresh item which is more pleasing on the eye but priced higher will lift the Christmas spirit as perhaps only a gaily decorated natural Christmas tree of fresh balsam bough could. It brings freshness to the whole theme of decorations giving it a rich feeling. If you are looking for impressiveness it is the Fresh wreath you have to look for.

Christmas Wreath Complete Information

You may find Fresh Christmas wreaths commercially available as;
o Those wreaths with Gold colored pine cones and a maroon bow of velvet
o Traditional design Wreaths with pine cones and berries and no bow.
o Those with white tipped pine cones and with a red water proof velvet bow thrown in.
o Plain wreath with only a Red bow
o Tear Drop shaped Wreath of balsam with a red bow of velvet
o Ones with tiny LED lights embedded for that exclusive effect.

Functionally the wreaths could be to;
o As an ornament on the Christmas Tree
o Wall and Mantle decoration
o As a tribute to dear departed close ones who would not be home for this Christmas.

Again the wreaths would be classified according the region of origin and the plant material used.

As for the sizes the standard is Circular pattern with an approximate diameter of 12 inches. The thickness could be anything around 4 inches. The tear drop shaped could be about 27 inches long and 16 inches wide. Here too the thickness could be about 4 inches. Each design offers you a variety of choices to get the right feeling of your Christmas décor.
One important factor we must not forget when selecting Christmas wreath is that, these should last the Holiday season. Naturally one would expect the manufacturers to look in to this and take action appropriately. Ask them and make sure before you make the commitment.

In spite of being natural some retailers offer ones with somewhat dry textured foliage, so due to processing or age. These do not have the feel of the "fresh off tree" feeling and also do not last that long. So be choosy when you want to buy Christmas Wreaths! Luckily now these can be ordered on line unlike in the days gone by. The items would be shipped generally overland by courier services and will reach you in no time.
