Making Christmas decorations from nature is a very old tradition. The very first holiday decorations were garlands made from tree branches, live Christmas trees, and evergreen wreaths. Natural materials have always been and will always be part of decorating for the holidays. You can decorate your home with items gotten from nature and not only be both modern and traditional, but save a lot of money at the same time. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Natural wreaths are available at almost every store, but you can make your own and save money.

You can make a small or large wreath from English Ivy. English Ivy is easy to grow and it does grow pretty quickly. Once your plant has some length to it, wrap the ivy around a frame that you have inserted into your pot. You can add lights or just about any kind of decorations you like such as berries or other natural decorations. Another great way to make a wreath is to make one from cut greens. Use a round wire frame that you can make from a coat hanger or you can purchase one at any craft store. Take some of your evergreen bunches and tie them together at the base with wire. Then, wind the evergreen branches around the wire frame or take a coat hanger apart and weaver the coat hanger wire around the branches from beginning to end and then form it into a circle.  You can decorate the evergreen bunches with natural fruits and berries and put a bow at the top. For Christmas tree wreaths, take some small twigs and make them into wreaths to hang them on your Christmas tree. You can use a craft Styrofoam circle and add leaf bunches, berries and pine cones with some fresh bay leaves stuck in for scent.  You can also use a glue gun to glue everything to the craft circle instead.

2. Natural Garland

Instead of buying garland at the store for your stairwells or for on your mantle, make them out of cut evergreen branches. Wire the evergreen branches and wind them around your handrails or place them on your mantle. They also look nice over a doorway in a swag design.

When you make your garland, add some bay leaves for a wonderful scent. If you have a bay laurel shrub, the leaves cut from the shrub would be perfect. If you don't have a bay laurel shrub, you can also purchase bay leaves in bulk in some markets. Secure the bay leaves with twine until you have the length that you need and then inter-mingle them with the evergreen branches. Then, add dried fruit, pine cones and berries.

3. Clove-Studded Oranges or Apples

Clove-studded oranges or apples are a wonderful traditional decoration and many years ago, they were given as gifts. They were called pomanders and some of these still exist in museums. Oranges, apples and lemons are typically used to make pomanders. They are very easy to make and they smell wonderful! Here are easy instructions for you to make your own pomanders.

First, with a small knitting needed, skewer or fork, pierce the fruit all over, making each hole about ½" apart. Then, put dried cloves into all of the wholes. In a small paper bag, mix 2 teaspoons each of ground cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add ½ teaspoon of ground orris root if you can find it. The orris root helps to dry and preserve the fruit. Put the clove-studded fruit in the paper bag and shake to completely coat the fruit. Then, place the fruit in a cool, dry place for two weeks. Shake the pomander once a day. Pomanders also look good in a bowl or displayed on a mantle.

Hanging it from the window casing is a much safer alternative and still looks beautiful. In fact why not put down the hammer and simply get an eye hook with a screw type shank. Those are the hooks that look like a question mark. You won't have to worry about a slipped hammer then!

Simply center the eyehook in the window casing. Screw it in Hang the wreath from it. Adjust the wreath to proper level and center.

One other small concern when hanging a wreath on a window: be sure that the wreath isn't hanging somewhere that it will obstruct a hasty exit in the event of a fire. Your family's safety is so much more important than any holiday decoration. If you have a picture window hanging the wreath from it would be a better option than one that offers a path outside the home.

It is decorated with candied fruits, which represent the jewels which were on the Three Kings' robes. There is a surprise baked into the cake, and whoever finds it becomes the king or queen of the house.

Steps to make Christmas birch branch reindeer:

• Structure formation:
• Dissecting the branches: Cut the branches into two logs, one-half the size of the other.
• Smoothing: Use garden trimmer or knife to remove excess side branches, leaves, etc. and smooth the logs.
• Making hole: Drill a hole in both the logs, a few inches from one end. These holes should be proportionate to the diameter of the dowel.
• Forming body: Fix a dowel in both the holes in such a way that the larger forms the abdomen and the smaller, the head portion.
• Legs: Drill four holes for the legs and insert dowels. You may also use branches of the trees in place of the dowels.
• Antlers: Make holes for the antlers on the head and place twigs.
• Nose: Fix the red bead as nose.

• Decoration: The main decoration is done to cover the dowel in the neck area and part of the legs. It is created in the form of a loosely shaped wreath.

1. Brighten your christmas tree

It's easy to string lights on your Christmas tree... but take tree lights very seriously at my house. My husband wraps each individual branch and twig with lights. Yes, it's a bit tedious... but the result is breathtaking. Hey, you're going to be looking at that tree all month... take the extra time and really make your tree glow... literally.

2. Decorate your stair rail

This is a given, but it amazes me how few actually do it. Whenever you see beautifully decorated homes in magazines you see this grand staircase wrapped in garland and lights. It's stunning. And you can have the same exact effect in your home. It's easy! Wrap your banisters with garland. You can go cheap and use the standard green garland in a box... or you can go all out and get some more realistic garland. Whatever your budget can handle... do what's best for you. Now, wrap the garland in white lights. It doesn't matter what kind of garland you use... because once those lights are on... wow! But don't stop there! Tie a pretty christmas ribbon bow at the bottom and top of the hand rails. And if you have enough ribbon, wind the ribbon loosely around the rail. Don't wrap the ribbon exactly like you wrapped the garland... offset it a bit. Now, you're really decorating!

And if you're inspired... grab some shiny christmas ball ornaments and hang those on your garland all the way up the stairs. I bet you didn't know your house could look so luxurious!

3. Add christmas bows

I add bows made of all kinds of christmas ribbon all over my house. On the stair rail, on my wreaths... on the ends of my draped garland. On door knobs. I attach them to my outdoor house lights. I add a big swag christmas bow just below my angel on my christmas tree. And for my second tree (yes, my second tree) I have a big 2-ribbon tree topper bow.

It's common to hang wreaths on your front door. But I love hanging wreaths on my windows. I'm not talking about just on the outside of your house. I also mean on the inside. I don't hang wreaths in all my windows... my I select a room that needs a little extra Christmas spirit and hang one in each window. I also hang a wreath above the fire place. And another on my book shelves. And guess what... I add bows to all of them.

All the formal decorating stuff is nice... but don't forget to add some personality and fun to your rooms. Especially in your foyer. Find something that makes you smile and put it where people will see it as soon as they come into your house. I found this Christmas center piece that is made of holly leaves, berries and 3 stacked gingermen. It is adorable! It makes me smile and I put it on a table in my foyer. Now, I enjoy it when I come home... and others can enjoy it when the visit. It's silly and I love it!

6. Create memories with small decorations

Growing up, I always remembered my Mother's little Christmas knick-knacks. Like snow globes and funny little snow men. I really didn't follow in tradition when I first had kids. But my Mother gifted me little silly items every year. And as the years have gone on, my children ask about some of these items when we decorate the house. I have a little igloo with snowmen that has a little light that acts like a fire. My daughter remembered this from last year and was so excited when she saw it out. It's the little things... literally... that can be the most special.

My fireplace mantel varies from year to year. I've draped garland and lights and hungs stockings. I've displayed a variety of different sized candles dressed in pine cones and garland. Like wreaths, add garland everywhere! I wrap garland on the banisters... I frame the door ways. I drape garland with fruit over my french doors. I lay garland along the top back of my couches. I even wrap my columns in garland.

I used to do the "nice" decorating in my front yard. White lights on the shrubs. Garland and white lights around my door. And it IS nice. But now, I try to add a little fun. Not too much... I still don't want my yard looking like I'm having a yard sale! This year I lined my front walk in light up candy canes. So cute! I still have my white lights on everything else... but its the candy canes that make me smile. And my kids love them!

Wrap boxes in shiny paper... tie a ribbon on them... and place them around your house. What fun! I place wrapped gift boxes on my book shelves, a few in a blank corner... some under the tree... anywhere that you need to add a little Christmas cheer. What an easy way to decorate!

Ah, the soft flicker of candle light can really add to the mood of a cozy home. I love the look of candles in windows. Obviously, don't use real candles for this. I also like to light a few candles around my home. The smell of cinnamon and holly is delicious.

13. Fill glass vases with cranberries and sparkle

Pull out those glass vases that just sit in your cupboard. Fill them with fake cranberries, clear glass stones, salt, pine cones, and/or christmas balls. Layer and be creative. And then leave these filled vases out. This a professional decorator trick. It's quick and it looks amazing!

14. Bowl of ornaments

Take a large bowl and fill it with some of your extra christmas balls. Or, collect some unique ones that you personally love... and place those in your bowl. Place this bowl in the center of your coffee table or dining table.

In Hawaii, Santa gives his reindeer a Christmas break and arrives in a canoe, barefoot, tanned and with his red furry pants rolled up. On Oahu, his first stop is, as it is for most of Hawaii's visitors, Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Keiki (children) visit their Hawaiian Santa at various cities on Oahu throughout the season.

While at Christmas time, many of the islanders enjoy watching the visitors in awe of this warm, friendly climate in the dead of winter, they also enjoy imagining what a white Christmas would be like. You'll hear many of the traditional mainland songs, like "Winter Wonderland" and "Jingle Bells."

Some Hawaiians though do have a white Christmas, that is if they're on the Big Island (island of Hawaii) and drive up above the tree line to the 10,000 foot high snowcapped peaks of Mauna Kea, transforming their boogie boards into sleds and building snowmen! With the current, cheap airfares from between Oahu and Neighbor Islands,a side trip from Oahu to the Big Island is more affordable than its been in a long time.

It's fun swapping tropical and white Christmas stories with locals. For us visitors it's especially fun to write home about how we spent our Christmas day on a beach! Some newcomers to Hawaii will even bring miniature trees down to the beach, although Hawaii has plenty Christmas trees. On Oahu,as on the other islands, trees from the mainland are sold. And, Hawaii has its own Christmas tree: the island Norfolk Pine. The tree doesn't have the spicy pine scent, but its largely spaced branches are wonderfully easy to decorate.

Hawaiian Christmas tree decorations are found everywhere. Craft fairs are great for finding local style ones: coconut frond woven ornaments, kukui nut and tapa cloth angels, Santas on surfboards in canoes and riding dolphins; along with beautiful wreaths made of island flowers and greenery.

Many of these craft fairs are events in themselves, complete with Hawaiian Christmas entertainment and food. You'll find many of these listed along with other holiday Oahu events in newspapers and free magazines at the airport.

Some of my favorite Oahu events at Christmas are the light displays in Honolulu and the music - choirs, orchestras and local style bands are found everywhere with free concerts at malls and on the beach. Adding to the holiday fun, many of Hawaii's most popular musicians like the Brothers Cazimero and Don Ho perform regularly in Waikiki.

The Honolulu City Lights (the city was given permission by Keola and Kapono Beamer to use the name of their all time hit song) is a spectacular display throughout Honolulu, including Waikiki, making Oahu a good pick for a Hawaiian holiday vacation.

The month-long, traditional festivities begin with the Kawaiahao Church Service in Honolulu (This was the first Christian church built in Hawaii and is extraordinary), the lighting of the City's 63-foot Norfolk Pine at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) and an electric parade and concert on December 3; however festivities continue throughout the holiday season.

For example, the Honolulu City Lights Trolley Tours run from December 8 to 30. The .50 fare (under age 4 free) benefits the Hawaii Food bank. For details, visit Honolulu Culture and Arts.
